K-9 Unit

The Wichita County Sheriff K-9 Unit consists of two K-9 teams that are nationally certified annually through the Unites States Police Canine Association, National Narcotic Detector Dog Association, and the National Police Canine Association.

The first team consists of a Belgian Malinios (Mal-in-wa) named Kimbo with his handler Deputy Josh Brown. K-9 Kimbo is trained in all aspects of patrol work including criminal apprehension, building searches, tracking, and narcotics detection. K-9 Kimbo was born on August 22nd, 2008 in the Czech Republic.  K-9 Kimbo began his tour of duty for the Wichita County Sheriff’s Office on November 1st 2009.

The second team consists of a German Shepherd named Zak who was imported from the Czech Republic and his handler Deputy Tim Putney. K-9 Zak is trained in narcotics detection along with tracking. K-9 Zak began his tour of duty with the Wichita County Sheriff’s Office in late 201. K-9 Zaj also conducts locker sniffs in area schools and is available to any area law enforcement agencies requesting any of the above listed K-9 services.

The purpose of the Wichita County Sheriff K-9 Unit is to provide a superior sense of smell, sight, and hearing as a valuable supplement to law enforcement man-power, which aids in crime prevention and control in Wichita County along with assisting all Law Enforcement agencies in the area upon request.

K-9 Kimbo and K-9 Zak are very busy throughout the year. Public demonstrations are given at many times for any organization requesting the service.  Because of the utilization of K-9 teams, the Wichita County Sheriff’s Office has seized thousands of dollars, numerous vehicles, and made hundreds of felony and misdemeanor arrests.

The K-9 Unit has been created and funded entirely through the generous donations of private parties and through the use of seizure funds. As a result, this enhanced service exists without the expenditure of any additional tax dollars.
